The world your child will enter
is not the one you prepared for.

There is a specific anxiety that settles over Indian parents around the time a child reaches Class 7 or 8. It does not arrive loudly. It arrives as a series of quiet questions. Which coaching class? Which stream? Which board? Which college? Which city? The questions feel urgent because the stakes feel enormous — and because everyone around you seems to already know the answers.

Most of those answers were assembled in a different era, for a different economy, by parents who were themselves operating on received wisdom. The framework worked well enough for long enough that it calcified into common sense. Study hard. Get into a good stream. Secure a degree from a recognised institution. Land a stable job. The rest follows.

That framework is not wrong. It is simply increasingly incomplete. And the gap between what it promises and what it delivers is now wide enough to be worth examining honestly — not to frighten you, but because parents who see clearly can make better choices than parents who are running a plan on faith.

This manual is not a verdict on school. It is an invitation to think about what school was designed to do, what it is no longer doing reliably, and what that means for how you raise a child in this particular decade.

Part One · The Bundle

School was not just school.
It was doing five things at once.

For generations, parents handed their children over to the school system and trusted it to do something enormous: prepare them for life. What they didn't fully articulate — because they didn't need to — was exactly how school accomplished this. It did it by bundling five distinct functions into one institution, one timetable, one annual fee.

These five functions were never listed in any prospectus. They were simply delivered, reliably, year after year, and so parents stopped thinking about them separately. The bundle felt like a single thing because it arrived as a single thing.

Credential

The marks, the board result, the degree — the documented proof that a child had passed through a recognised system. The key that opened the next door.

Now: The credential is inflating. More of it is being produced than the economy can absorb.

Socialisation

Peers, belonging, how to be in a group of unrelated people. How to navigate conflict, friendship, hierarchy — without the family as buffer.

Now: Screens have fractured this. Children are socially proximate but emotionally isolated in ways previous generations were not.

Routine

A structure for the day. A reason to wake up, a calendar that filled itself, a rhythm that organised childhood without any parent having to design it.

Now: Still delivered reliably — one of the few functions school does as well as ever.

Identity

"I'm a science student." "I'm good at English." The stream, the subject preference, the school — all gave a child a sense of who they were becoming.

Now: Identity built on a stream or institution is increasingly fragile as both shift beneath people's feet.

Exposure

Introduction to fields and domains a child might not encounter at home. History, science, mathematics, music — a surface-level acquaintance with the breadth of human knowledge.

Now: The internet delivers exposure at a scale no school can match. This function has been largely outsourced without anyone noticing.

The problem is not that any one of these five functions has completely collapsed. The problem is that parents are still treating school as if the full bundle is intact — still being delivered in the same way, with the same reliability, with the same downstream outcomes. It is not.

When a bundle starts to fray, the right response is not panic. It is design. Identify which functions are still being delivered. Supplement the ones that aren't. And be honest about which functions school was never designed to provide in the first place.

Part Two · The Deal

The implicit contract most families
signed without reading the fine print.

There was a deal on the table for most of the twentieth century, and it was a reasonable one. Study hard. Clear the entrance exam. Get into a reputable college. Graduate with a recognised degree. The market will absorb you, compensate you fairly, and the sacrifices — the tuition fees, the coaching hours, the childhood subordinated to the preparation — will have been worth it.

Millions of Indian families built their entire financial and emotional architecture around this deal. Parents worked harder than they needed to, lived below their means, deferred their own aspirations — not out of confusion but out of clarity. They knew exactly what they were investing in. The credential economy had delivered for enough people, for long enough, that it had the force of established fact.

The deal is not dead. It is renegotiating its terms, slowly and uncomfortably, while most families continue to operate as though the original contract still holds. The gap between what parents believe they are investing in and what they are actually getting is widening. And the families who see this early enough to respond thoughtfully will make different choices from those who discover it only when their child is twenty-four and searching.

Part Two · When the Best-Case Fails

The IIT story.
India's most concentrated data point.

If the credential economy were working, it would work best for those who had climbed the furthest. The IITs are the hardest gate to clear in the Indian education system. Of approximately thirteen lakh students who sit the Joint Entrance Examination every year, around twenty thousand make it through. The brand carries fifty years of premium. If the deal holds anywhere, it holds here.

The data from 2024 is worth looking at directly.

The cause is not a single failure. IIT intake expanded by roughly 1,440 seats between 2020 and 2024 — a democratising impulse that is hard to argue against. Simultaneously, the technology sector — which had historically absorbed the largest share of IIT graduates — began reducing hiring as AI tools reduced the volume of entry-level engineering work required. The Vice Chancellor of the BITS Group noted placements down twenty to thirty per cent across the board and attributed part of this directly to AI and large language models reducing the number of engineers companies needed to hire.

The irony that the students trained to build these systems are now among those displaced by them is not lost on anyone close to the situation.

Then there is the emigration data. A 2023 study by the National Bureau of Economic Research tracked the top one thousand JEE rankers from 2010. Among the top thousand, thirty-six per cent had moved abroad. Among the top hundred, sixty-two per cent. Among the top ten rankers — nine out of ten were working outside India. The better the rank, the higher the probability of leaving.

India has invested the equivalent of over three lakh crore rupees in elite technical institutions over the past two decades, with a significant share of operational expenses funded by government subsidy. The graduates who leave take that investment with them. The graduates who stay face a market that is contracting at exactly the top of the value chain.

A note that cannot be footnoted away

Researcher Dheeraj Singh — himself an IIT Kanpur and IIM Calcutta alumnus — has spent years using RTI filings to surface data that institutions have been reluctant to make visible. What he found: 115 students across IITs have died by suicide since 2005, with 98 deaths occurring on campus. The rate has not remained constant. It has accelerated — doubling in the 2015–25 period compared to the decade before. Six students died by suicide in 2024 alone, with the worsening placement crisis identified as a distinct, identifiable pressure point.

The system trains young people to believe that employment is the validation of their worth. When that validation fails, after everything that was sacrificed to earn it, the consequences extend far beyond the professional. This is not a footnote. It is part of the full picture.

None of this is an argument against IIT, or against the JEE, or against the extraordinary education these institutions provide. It is an argument against treating one outcome — placement on Day Zero — as the sole measure of whether the preparation was right. And it is a mirror held up to the entire credential economy, of which IIT is simply the most concentrated and visible expression.

If the best-case is struggling, the question every parent needs to sit with is this: what exactly am I preparing my child for?

Part Three · The Capability Gap

What the policy says.
What the report card measures.

India's National Education Policy 2020 is, by any honest reading, a thoughtful document. It articulates a vision of education that goes meaningfully beyond subject mastery — one that includes critical thinking, creativity, communication, ethical reasoning, environmental awareness, collaborative problem-solving, and several other capabilities that anyone who has thought seriously about what children need would recognise as important.

NEP 2020 exists. The competency framework it describes exists. The gap between that vision and the daily reality of most Indian classrooms also exists — and it is large.

What board examinations primarily assess is a narrower set of things: the ability to recall subject-specific content accurately, to solve structured problems within a defined method, and to perform under timed conditions. These are not worthless skills. But they are a small subset of what a human being needs to navigate a complex, rapidly-changing world — and they are precisely the skills that AI is becoming most capable of replicating at scale.

The policy has moved. The examination has not fully followed. And so children spend twelve years being assessed — and therefore optimising — for a narrower version of capability than either their own lives or their country's future actually requires.

This is not the school's fault entirely. Assessment systems are slow. Boards are conservative by design. Teachers teach to what is examined because that is what students, parents, and institutions hold them accountable for. The incentive structure is coherent — it just points in a direction that is increasingly misaligned with the destination.

Which is another way of saying: the gap between what school develops and what a child needs is not going to close from the inside, at the pace this moment requires. Someone else has to fill it.

Part Four · The AI Inflection

What changes for children
is not what changes for adults.

Most of the conversation about AI and work focuses on adults — the professional whose job is being automated, the company rethinking its hiring, the economy absorbing the shock of a technology that does cognitive work faster and cheaper than humans. That conversation is real and urgent.

But there is a different and more specific question for parents: what does AI mean for a child who is ten, or thirteen, or sixteen years old right now — and who will enter a working world shaped by this technology at precisely the moment they are supposed to be getting started?

The short answer is that AI handles the retrievable. Any knowledge that can be looked up, any problem that has a defined method, any content that can be generated from a prompt — this is the AI's territory now, and that territory is expanding. The skills that remain distinctly human are not softer or easier. They are simply different.

The implication for education is significant. A child who has been trained primarily to retrieve and reproduce — to get the right answer on the right exam — has been trained, in large part, for the AI's lane. A child who has learned to think, question, synthesise, and judge has been trained for the one lane the AI cannot enter.

This does not mean abandoning academic rigour. It means layering something on top of it — and, more importantly, being honest about which parts of the academic programme are developing genuinely human capabilities and which parts are optimising for a type of performance that will matter less with each passing year.

The question is no longer which subject to study. It is what kind of thinker your child is becoming — and whether the system they are in is actually helping build that.

Part Five · What to Actually Develop

Build the child,
not the résumé.

If schools are not fully bridging the capability gap, and if the AI inflection is making parts of the standard curriculum less relevant, the question that lands in every parent's lap is a practical one: what should I actually be developing in my child?

There are three layers to an honest answer. They are not programmes to enrol in, or subjects to add. They are orientations — ways of approaching a child's development that change what you pay attention to, what you celebrate, and what you stop optimising for.

The Human Capability Stack

Some capabilities compound over a lifetime. They are not tied to a subject or a qualification — they are portable across everything a person will ever do. Developing these in a child is not a soft alternative to academic preparation. It is the foundation that makes everything else — including academic performance — more durable.

Capability One
Curiosity

The ability to follow an interest through difficulty — to stay with something when it gets hard, not because an exam requires it, but because the thing itself is interesting. This is the engine. Without it, everything else is borrowed motivation.

Watch for: What does your child keep returning to, unprompted, when nothing is being asked of them?

Capability Two
Communication

Not performance — not the ability to speak confidently in a debate. The deeper ability to make something clear to someone else: to understand what the other person doesn't know, and to build a bridge from their position to yours. This is sense-making, not presentation.

Watch for: Can your child explain what they're thinking in a way that makes you actually understand?

Capability Three
Resilience

The ability to fail and continue. Not the absence of distress — that is not resilience, that is detachment. The capacity to experience setback, feel it fully, and still move. A child who has never been allowed to fail is not protected. They are fragile.

Watch for: How does your child talk about things they got wrong? With shame, or with curiosity?

Capability Four
Craft

Making something real, with sustained attention, over time. Writing. Building. Growing something. Playing an instrument. Cooking. The form matters less than the quality of attention it demands. Craft is how a child learns that good things take longer than they expect — and are worth it.

Watch for: Is there anything your child makes — actually makes — with their hands and time?

The Emotional Architecture

The IIT data carries a particular lesson that is separate from employment statistics. A system that trains young people to define their worth by a single outcome — the placement, the rank, the offer letter — creates the conditions for catastrophic fragility when that outcome does not arrive. This is not a problem that more coaching solves. It is a problem of emotional architecture.

A child with robust emotional architecture can handle uncertainty without paralysis. Can fail at something important without it becoming a verdict on their worth. Can navigate the anxiety of not knowing what comes next — which is, increasingly, the permanent condition of adult life.

This is not developed through protection. It is developed through exposure to manageable difficulty — through being allowed to struggle with things that matter, with support available but not constantly deployed. A parent's instinct is to clear the path. The more useful instinct is to walk alongside the child as they navigate it themselves.

"Anxiety and excitement are the same physiological state. The difference is the story the child has been helped to tell about uncertainty. One story makes uncertainty a threat. The other makes it a signal that something interesting is happening."

The Exploration Permission

The JEE-coaching model of preparation is built on a specific assumption: that the destination is known, and the entire task is to optimise the child's path toward it. This assumption is understandable. It is also, for most children, deeply counterproductive.

A child who has been pointed at a destination since age twelve has not had the space to discover what they are genuinely drawn to. They have had the space to become very good at a particular kind of performance. These are not the same thing — and the gap between them shows up, with full force, somewhere around age twenty-four, when the performance ends and the person underneath it has to figure out what they actually want.

Exploration permission does not mean an unstructured childhood with no direction. It means treating a child's interests — even the ones that seem impractical, even the ones that change every six months — as data. As signals worth paying attention to. A child who keeps returning to the same thing, without being asked to, is telling you something. The task is to notice it.

Some schools are already building this in. Models like project-based learning, mastery-based progression, and design-thinking curricula — practised in a small but growing number of institutions — are intelligent responses to exactly this reality. They are not utopian experiments. They are attempts to take seriously what the world is actually asking of the next generation.

You do not need to move your child to one of these schools to apply this thinking. You need to change what you celebrate at home — and what you stop treating as a crisis.

Part Six · The Many Paths

The system prepares children
for one path. There are many.

The education system, as currently configured, prepares children almost exclusively for one destination: the corporate market. Technology, finance, consulting, structured employment. That path is real, and for many children it will remain the primary one. But it is one path — and the world your child will inhabit is full of others, each equally valid, each requiring a meaningfully different kind of preparation.

What follows is not an exhaustive list. It is a provocation — a reminder that the map most families are using shows only one road out of many. The paths that go unmapped are not less real. They are simply less visible from within the credential economy.

But it is contracting at precisely the entry level — the positions that the credential was designed to unlock. AI is accelerating this contraction. A child prepared only for this path is carrying a plan with one scenario and no fallback.

The global market for skilled, articulate, adaptable Indians is large and growing. Artists, designers, architects, filmmakers, musicians, writers, animators, craftspeople — the people who make the things that give culture its texture and meaning. In an AI-abundant world, this path does not shrink. It expands in importance. The ability to make something original, felt, and human is precisely the capability AI cannot manufacture. Yet school treats this path as extracurricular — literally outside the curriculum.

Athletes, coaches, sports scientists, performance trainers, physiotherapists — a professional ecosystem that India is building, slowly, around sport. The child who dedicates ten years to a sport is developing discipline, resilience under pressure, the ability to perform when it counts, and a relationship with the physical world that no amount of screen time can replicate. This path demands early investment and suffers from late recognition. The preparation and the reward are badly misaligned — and improving.

People who build things — businesses, products, systems, physical objects. Founders, craftspeople, small manufacturers, people who make something from nothing and then make it work. This path runs almost entirely outside formal preparation. What it requires — risk tolerance, systems thinking, persistence, the ability to learn from failure — is the opposite of what exam optimisation develops.

Civil services, policy, grassroots organisations, public health, rural infrastructure, the social sector. The paths that India most urgently needs populated, and the ones the credential economy most thoroughly fails to incentivise. A child who chooses either of these has to do so against every signal the system sends — and usually does it because of who they are, not because they were prepared for it.

The most interesting paths of the next twenty years may not be legible today. The people who will walk them are currently in Class 8, trying to decide between science and commerce. What they need is not a map to a specific destination. They need the capability to navigate terrain that hasn't been charted yet — which is a very different thing to prepare for.

The point is not that your child should be steered toward any particular path on this list. The point is that the current system — by preparing so thoroughly for one — leaves children genuinely unprepared for the others. And a child who knows themselves well: who has developed curiosity, resilience, communication, and craft, who has been given the space to explore what they keep returning to — that child can find their footing on any path they choose.

That is antifragility applied to a child's future. Not immunity from uncertainty. The capacity to move through it.

Part Seven · A Different Measure

The question nobody
is asking at the report card meeting.

This manual is not a verdict on school. Good schools do important work. The teachers who show up with genuine care for children are doing something that cannot be automated and should not be undervalued. The social experience of school — the friendships, the conflicts, the belonging — remains one of the most irreplaceable things it provides.

But a parent who reads this far deserves a practical landing point — not a framework, not a checklist, just a question to carry into the next parent-teacher meeting, the next report card review, the next conversation with your child about what comes after board exams.

These are not questions with clean answers. They are questions worth living with — returning to every year, as your child changes and as the world they are growing toward changes around them.

The old framework is not broken beyond use. But it is incomplete — and the parents who close that gap thoughtfully, intentionally, without waiting for institutions to close it for them, are the ones building children who will be genuinely ready for whatever comes next.
